Cultivating a mindset of gratitude has been proven to increase happiness and well-being, yet human nature makes it difficult to sustain.
A recent podcast on Hidden Brain, called “The Enemies of Gratitude”, highlights this tendency and encourages us to actively shift our focus. We often dwell on the challenges we face – the headwinds against which we are constantly pushing – and neglect to acknowledge the tailwinds that propel us forward. Just as a runner may curse the headwind while running, but quickly forget it once the wind is at their back, we can easily overlook the positive forces in our lives.
Today, do a “gratitude audit” to identify the tailwinds in your life:
👩👩👦 People: Consider the individuals who support you, uplift you, and contribute to your success. Who are the mentors, friends, family members, or colleagues who are your cheerleaders?
🏕 Opportunities: Take a moment to appreciate the chances you've been given, the doors that have opened for you, and the experiences that have helped you grow.
🙏
What else do you appreciate about your life? Your family, a nice home? Flexibility in your job? Your weekly pickleball game?
The benefits of gratitude extend beyond simply recognizing your tailwinds. Sharing your appreciation with those who support you strengthens your relationships and amplifies the positive impact of your gratitude.
Gratitude doesn't negate the existence of headwinds. It simply adds a counterpoint, allowing you to appreciate the positive forces, the tailwinds, that are also at play. By consciously cultivating gratitude, you can harness the power of your tailwinds and navigate life's challenges with a more positive and resilient mindset.
What tailwinds are you grateful for? 💜
