When my daughter was 17, she went on a medical mission trip to Nicaragua with Tufts Medical School. I told one of the doctors who was organizing the trip that she wanted to be a surgeon. She looked at my quiet, mild-mannered daughter and said “she will never make it. She isn’t tough enough.”
